The Courtyard House
An inward-looking bioclimatic sanctuary in Seattle that carves an open-to-sky quadrangle out of monolithic board-marked concrete, charred Japanese cedar, and shifting daylight.

Carving Sanctuary Out of Urban Density
Situated on a busy corner parcel in Seattle's dense urban fringe, the project site was subjected to vehicular noise and visual intrusion. In response, Measurement Architects inverted the conventional suburban paradigm: rather than orienting large windows outward toward the street, the building presents an austere, monolithic exterior wall crafted from rough-sawn Douglas fir board-formed concrete.
This blind perimeter wall shields the occupants from acoustic disturbances while creating an impenetrable psychological barrier between the frantic urban realm and the tranquil interior universe. A single calibrated slit provides access through a heavy blackened steel pivot door, establishing a dramatic compression-and-release threshold sequence upon entry.
The Courtyard as an Atmospheric Heart
At the center of the dwelling lies a 600 sq ft open-to-sky quadrangle. Featuring a shallow basalt reflecting pool and a solitary Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum), the courtyard serves as the spatial and ecological heart of the home. All primary living, dining, and studio pavilions wrap around this central void.
Floor-to-ceiling motorized sliding glass panels with ultra-thin 20mm sightlines allow the boundaries between interior and exterior to completely dissolve. Throughout changing seasons, the courtyard acts as an ever-shifting natural painting, registering the passage of rain, snowfall, and golden-hour sunlight across textured concrete surfaces.
Monolithic Mass Meets Ethereal Cantilevers
The structural strategy utilizes high-strength post-tensioned voided concrete slabs, allowing the upper painting studio to dramatically cantilever 4.5 meters over the courtyard without the need for intermediate columns. This structural daring preserves continuous sightlines through the entire ground level.
The tactile interplay between the raw, heavy concrete and charred Shou Sugi Ban cedar siding evokes a timeless dialogue between permanence and warmth. Hand-rubbed blackened steel elements and rift-sawn American white oak cabinetry introduce refined micro-details that balance the monumental raw mass of the architecture.
Passive Solar Geometry & Convective Cooling
The house operates on bioclimatic principles. The massing was computationally optimized for the Pacific Northwest solar path: deep overhangs block high-angle summer sun (68°) to prevent overheating, while allowing low-angle winter sun (24°) to penetrate deeply and charge the polished concrete thermal mass floors.
Natural ventilation relies on the stack effect: cool air drawn across the shaded courtyard water pool enters through low-level operable louvers, naturally rises through the double-height living volume, and purges excess warm air through automated clerestory exhausts at the roof parapet.

Board-Marked Concrete
4,000 PSI architectural concrete cast against rough-sawn Douglas fir planks to retain authentic wood grain texture.
Shou Sugi Ban Cedar
Traditional Japanese yakisugi charred cedar offering superior natural weatherproofing, insect resistance, and velvety black patina.
Honed Basalt Flagstones
Locally quarried Pacific Northwest basalt with flamed non-slip finish, lining the courtyard reflection basin and interior walkways.
Rift White Oak
Sustainably harvested straight-grain white oak applied across custom flush cabinetry, ceiling acoustic baffles, and floating stair treads.
Blackened Steel Plate
Hot-rolled steel plates with hand-rubbed beeswax finish for the monumental entry pivot door, hearth mantle, and stair suspension.
